Here's a link to all the ideas gathered for the HOW and WHY of the Friz 5...I'll keep adding as great ideas come forward.

Thanks to everyone for continuing to commit to the Friz 5 in your daily practices. I'm re-reading the book Ruthless Equity (fabulous, BTW) and sticking to these practices IS a path to equity...making sure kids are connected, clear on what they are to do, get feedback and support, and--most importantly--have access to grade level learning targets and assignments!

OCTOBER 26 EARLY RELEASE
Just a reminder that time is alloted for everyone to work on Global Compliance requirements as well as a KnowBe4 training during CT time on 10/26. You'll receive the link for the KnowBe4 training that week. Thanks for doing these...I know they can be a pain, but they also keep us current in knowledge and compliant for our insurance providers!!!!

EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (EAP)
Attached to this week's Monday Memo email, you'll find an updated access flyer for the EAP program. Remember that this is FREE to all employees to provide a whole bunch of different supports (examples: mental health, finances, quitting smoking, etc.). ANY access of EAP is completely confidential. If you need any assistance or have questions, please reach out to Maddie Mercado.

BILINGUAL FAMILY LIAISON
Eli Panchi has resigned her position, and we are now looking for a new Bilingual Family Liaison. Please reach out to me, your principal, or Lynn Smolen for any interpretation/translation needs.

EXCLUSIONS
FYI, starting Tuesday, students who are not in compliance with physicals/immunizations/medical documentation will be excluded until they are in compliance. Many thanks to our nurses Sharon Preskill and Lora Viers for all their work on this. If you have any questions, please reach out to them.

OCTOBER WELLNESS CALENDAR
Thanks to Laura Livesay and Matt Shannon for putting together this October Wellness Calendar and for letting me share it with everyone!

Ohhh...Marshall Memo had this summary of an article about how to NOT burn out students' (or adults'!!!) working memory. I love these quick reminders...

How to Avoid Overloading Students’ Working Memory

In this Edutopia article, teacher/researcher Ian Kelleher says students’ working memory – their mental sketchpad – is a “huge bottleneck to learning.” That’s because the amount of real-time information the human brain can handle – its cognitive load – is only three to five items for 10-20 seconds. If teachers overload students’ working memory, “learning is hard or impossible.” Students may seem to be understanding during a lesson, but if there’s cognitive overload, very little will make it into long-term memory.

The key to learning that lasts, says Kelleher, is reducing extraneous cognitive load and providing temporary scaffolding. “Anything  that isn’t intrinsic to the learning task itself, or isn’t part of the process of helping it stick in students’ long-term memory, is extraneous cognitive load,” he says. His suggestions:

1. Keep assignments and directions clear and simple. This is especially important with homework, when students are mostly on their own. “Remember that your students are novice learners in the subject, whereas you’re an expert,” says Kelleher. With assignments:

  • Number each step.

  • Make sure students have easy access to the resources they need.

  • Be sure that prerequisite knowledge and skills have been mastered.

  • Limit the ways students can submit their work.

  • Tightly align homework assignments with class work.

  • Remember that with homework, quality is more important than quantity.

2. Improve the classroom work environment. Eliminating distracting noise is part of Classroom Management 101, and that extends to music. “If you want to play music in class,” says Kelleher, “deliberately choose when, knowing that for some students it will add significant cognitive load.” The bottom line: music should reduce stress and improve attention. It’s also helpful to avoid visual clutter in the classroom. “Everything there should have a purpose,” says Kelleher. “Design, don’t decorate. Have less on show at once, and rotate it as the year goes on.”

3. Present visual content information effectively. Kelleher agrees with Rich Mayer’s principles of multimedia learning:

  • Provide only the text and visuals the learner needs, as economically as possible.

  • Give students verbal cues on what to look at; don’t make assumptions.

  • Minimize the amount of text, and don’t read slides out loud, which can create cognitive overload. “Prompt students to read the text,” says Kelleher, “and give them time to do so with you being silent.”

  • Use humor with caution, and only when it amplifies the idea being taught. It’s not good if students remember a cartoon or funny image rather than the content.

4. Nurture each student’s sense of belonging. “For many students, for many reasons, much of their active working memory may be taken up with things not related to the topic of your class,” says Kelleher. “To what extent do you help each student feel safe, build their trust, and feel that their unique story matters in your class? … To what extent do you work to eliminate identity threat in all its forms? To what extent do you help build each student’s sense of social belonging?” It’s wise to invest time early in the school year to get to know students, help them get to know each other, and establish routines and rituals that make for a safe, predictable culture.

5. Build in temporary scaffolds. “These help students to offload some of their thinking onto paper,” says Kelleher, “so that they have less ‘new stuff’ to hold in their working memory at once.” Here are some examples, each faded over time and brought back when necessary:

  • Visual planning sheets to help students organize their thinking. Students might be explicitly told that these will help free up space in active working memory so they can think more deeply.

  • For a writing assignment early in the year, students are allowed to have note cards with quotations to help them focus on mechanics and usage.

  • In a Spanish class, students make a help sheet on difficult verb tenses.

  • In a physics class, students use an equation sheet early on.

  • With a multi-week project, students have a single-column rubric for check-ins.

  • When launching a new curriculum unit, plan short activities to help students “awaken” and connect their prior knowledge and experience.

Monday Morning Memo 10/10/22

For all those who do Medicaid billing, this is your reminder to do it! We need you to please stay on top of this!!! THANK YOU!!!! 😁

If you have no idea what this means...you don't have to do it! YAY!!!!

I want to say thank you to Sue Pinkawa and Paula Kvacik for helping one of my students this week. When I went to pick her up from her classroom for reading, she was crying because her very special stuffed snake, that was given to her by her father, had an eye that had fallen off. Sue and Paula came to the rescue and helped to put the eye back on the snake. If that wasn’t kind enough…Sue even sewed up the hole in the snake. This above and beyond work that they do is so appreciated and essential. This brightened the student's day, and it helped her to be ready to learn. On the way back to class, she said " Since they were kind to me, I am going to be kind to someone else today!" Isn't that the best! It does take the whole D114 team to support our students and to help them grow as learners and people.
-From Joan Kantenwein (Reading Specialist at Lotus)

Thanks, as always, to the wonderful Lotus Kitchen Staff!  You continue to prepare and serve us delicious breakfasts and lunches.  You're all appreciated!
and
Thank you, also, to Emilly Reczek, Abbey Kadera and Alana Carlson for meeting together to support a student.  Alana, your ideas were invaluable.
Mary Santi (Second and Third Grade Case Manager)

Kudos to the amazing Lotus and Stanton Kitchen Staff for one more amazing service for Teacher Institute Day.
Never stop shining your light girls, you brighten up the cafeterias every day.
Thank you for all yo do.
Much love.
From Georgette Franco (Food Services Coordinator)

Thanks to everyone for making the Day of Service happen at full-ish steam again and for an amazing Institute Day! I'm so proud to work with you!!!

Please send me your kudos for colleagues each week! I'll happily post them in this section!

Here's a link to all the ideas gathered for the HOW and WHY of the Friz 5...I'll keep adding as great ideas come forward.

Based on the feedback on the Jot Thoughts exit slips from both sites, it seems that engagement strategies are a place we want to continue to GROW. I loved seeing all the GLOWS about Personal Greetings at the Door!!!

Let's think back to the session that I got to lead with everyone. There were very purposeful engagement strategies used:
  • Lotus--Natalie did a Stand Up, Hand Up, Pair Up check in with you using the emojis.
  • 4 Corners discussion groups--when you moved to Compass Points. This can work if you put up 4 different questions/ideas and ask students to move to a corner to focus on that question/idea. You can keep kids moving around the corners or stay in one place like we did.
  • Rally Robin--when you did the back and forth brainstorming on the 5 questions I gave you. This is a GREAT review strategy when you're asking students to recall key information or quickly brainstorm ideas.
  • Collaborative Writing--when you worked in small clusters to come to consensus on what's easy for you in the Friz 5 and what's challenging. This works for anything where you want kids to work together on a task.
  • Stay and Stray--when two members of your cluster left to learn with another group and two stayed, then we flipped it. This is a fabulous way for kids to share learning and then learn from others. This is a great option to consider instead of students presenting one at a time for the class. I also gave you a structure with starter phrases to give positive feedback.
We'll keep building these into our work together and allow time for you to think about how you could use the strategies!

Here are links to the slide decks I used on Friday.

Thanks to everyone for engaging in the learning on Friday and for your honest reflection. I loved reading the jot thoughts and really appreciate your input. I also truly appreciate how everyone is doing your best to bring the Friz 5 to life. It's great for our kids!!!

To all the staff for your amazing support, supervision, and help to run a super-smooth first pep rally, we THANK YOU!!! We could not have done it without you! One Team, All In!
-From Stephanie Kaye (Stanton Instructional Coach) and Laura Livesay (8th Grade Science)...and both are Student Council Sponsors

To the ELA teachers piloting Amplify - I wanted to say how awesome it's been to see such collaboration and problem-solving together when navigating the new program. I always look forward to team discussions with you! and
To Kim and Meghan - it's so much fun sharing our "burrow" together downstairs. I'm so glad you're here and I love chatting with you both each day!
and
To ALL the teams at Stanton - thank you for being patient as we navigate the new SST meetings and system! ~Stephanie Kaye (Stanton Instructional Coach)

Kudos to Gayle McManamon for looking each one of my students in the eyes and telling them she’s proud of them. You’re so good at making each student feel valued!
and
Kudos to my whole team (Nicole, Donna, Ashley, Debbie, Deb, Kristine, Melanie) for just being amazing! Seriously, I don’t know what I’d do without each one of you!!
and
Kudos to Yesenia for the way you make each student feel so excited about what’s for breakfast!
and
Kudos to Matt, Natalie, Cathy, and the whole SST for giving amazing support with a new student a couple weeks ago!
-Sami Harshaw (Kindergarten Teacher)

To Rich Bressett for his awesome playlist during basketball open gym… His jams are the best way to start the day!
and
Lynn Smolen for her unwavering patience, guidance, and humor.
and
Kim Mack for being a supportive mentor and the best SWC partner!
-Meghan Reimers (Stanton Counselor)

Big shout out to grade-level teachers for all of the work into getting Number Corner started. There is a ton of time that goes into getting materials to ready in addition to planning instruction.  Our students are so lucky to have you!
-Erica Barraza (Lotus Instructional Coach)

Thank you to EVERYONE who helped out this week in preschool covering classrooms for our SLO administration and to sub.  It takes a village and you guys all stepped up!  Thank you to Natalie Udstuen, Erica Barraza, Amanda Lorenz, Erin CJ, Kim VanHoorelbeke, Sharon Preskill, Fiona Wisniewski, Lynn Smolen, and Gina Crosthwaite.

and

Thank you to all our preschool aides for your patience, flexibility, and busting your butt this week to make sure everything was done and everyone’s rooms were set and covered while we were short handed.  Mindy Auld, you have been working in both the aide and teacher role for almost 2 weeks helping out subs. I’m blown away by your ability to do it all and with a smile on your face!  Thank you!

and

Thank you Kristine Gumm for being EVERYWHERE in preschool.  The preschool floater job is challenging enough and you are always helping in Kindergarten! That’s a big job and you have been rocking it!  You step right into each classroom with a seamless transition, you have made personal connections with the students (and there’s TONS you have to know in the whole preschool AND kindergarten), you help keep all the preschool classrooms stocked with supplies and set up for the day, you help collect observational data, and are willing to help in any capacity!  Thank you so much!!!

-Michelle Magness (PreK Teacher)

A huge shout out to my Preschool team and the countless other staff members that pitched in to assist while I was gone. Being at home sick brings with it that sense of guilt even though it's out of your hands, a concern for your teammates having to take on more and a worry about your classroom kiddos. My team kept me up to speed at all times, checked in on me continuously, encouraged me to take care of myself first and kept my student's daily routines moving forward. I am so thankful for the loving and caring support!

-Mary. Foersterling (PreK Teacher)

Thank you to Cathy Jawnyj for helping me with the Kids Success line after school. The bus was running a little late on Friday and Cathy saw the need for the extra help. It’s a big group of kiddos with quite a few Pre-K students. She helped me make sure that all the students got safely on their  bus.  Thank you for taking the time to help. It was very kind of you!
-Joan Kantenwein (Reading Recovery/Literacy Super Guru at Lotus 😊

Thank you to Natalie Udstuen for always offering support and for understanding special circumstances.  Words cannot express how much you helped me this past week.
and
Thanks to Joan Kantenwein for always taking the time to offer wonderful ideas.  It is such a pleasure to work with you.
-Mary Santi (Second and Third Grade Case Manager)

I want to give a kudos to Kim Leable for taking a friend and helping them get caught up on several assessments! I so appreciate your willingness to help :)
-Mollie Herchenbach (3rd Grade Teacher)

Thank you to the awesome Business Office team of Andrea, Kristie, Maddie, and Mary who make doing my job possible!

Here's a link to all the ideas gathered for the HOW and WHY of the Friz 5...I'll keep adding as great ideas come forward.

Because CLEAR IS KIND, here's some info the Administrative Team would like you to know about classroom walk-throughs:
*We'll be looking for the Friz 5 in action. We don't expect to see all 5 and know that we will see different elements depending on when we come in the room.
*We will stay a maximum of 15 minutes (unless something amazing is happening and you want us to stay or to help!).
*We all have our way of giving feedback. I use a hand print that's a note (and can stick to anything you like!), but each of us has our own style that we're comfortable with.
*If you EVER have any questions or suggestions for any of us, please reach out!

Thanks to everyone who is showing commitment to making the Friz 5 come to life! At Friday's Institute Day, we'll do some review and check in on what's going well, what's challenging, and support everyone in continuing to focus on these 5 key moves.

October 7 Institute Day
Yip yay it's Institute Day!!! The DRAFT plan is linked here. If I missed anything/anyone, please let me know! Questions and input are appreciated!!!! I'll send out the final plan later this week when the final details are worked out and after all of you have a chance have input! We tried to align the time to the work everyone is doing!

Pop Machines
Due to increased costs, the price of pop in both buildings' machines has been increased to $1 by the vendor. Thanks for understanding. 💓

Jeff and I were doing his goal-setting meeting for his evaluation, and we came across this great article about Student Involvement versus Student Engagement.

My favorite part was a question set to measure student engagement, and this question in particular:

"To what degree are students creating rather than consuming?"

Thanks to everyone for your feedback! Erica and Stephanie are sending out Lotus- and Stanton-specific supports, but I'll also post the link to a folder containing them all here so they are easy to find, everyone can see everything, and you're reminded to check them out!
