Monday Memo 9/28/20

Thank you to Andrea DeMatteo for jumping in your car to do a bus meal run when we
hit an issue. You make sure over 50 meals got into our kids hands.
THANK YOU!
and
To 4th grade for working so hard to develop differentiated plans for your kids---and especially ways to stretch a few even farther!
-From Heather

To Maddie Hanson,Molly Goodsite, Dan Olson, Lisa Shannon, Danielle MaCarthy for working with our kiddos to free us up for other kiddos.
and
Also a Big thanks to Mike Sementa and Stephanie Kaye for all of their help with curriculum planning.

ILPA Paras :)

To Emily Armbrecht for doing super awesome things with the kids -from bucket drumming, to musical literacy, and fun projects to get kids thinking how music has impacted their lives.  Holy awesome class participation! And a great use of FlipGrid for immediate assessment of drumming skills.
and
To Cathy Jawnyj for being amazingly kind and helpful in explaining anything related to MTSS, PBIS, and simply just helping me get acclimated to Stanton.
and
To Liz Andersen for lending an ear to hear me  open up, and for giving me some of her old D114 t-shirts!
and
To Fred Miller for being so open and welcoming me into his classroom - the first I got to pop in to. He showed a really interesting TED Talk about culture and stereotypes that we all should watch! Also, Fred continuously checked for students' understanding on the topics being discussed - thumbs up/thumbs down, posing questions, having students respond either by sharing or typing in the chat box.
-From Stephanie Kaye

Kudos to Erica Barazza, Amanda Lorenz, Kally Kibitlewski, Pam Exon and Jenn Wenc fourth grade team for their combined efforts on enrichment groups for students.
and
Thank you to Andrea DeMatteo, ALL of the Bus Drivers and Support Staff that have been working diligently to ensure supply pick up is running as smoothly as possible.
and
Thank you to Tiffany Tardio and Mike Szotek for continuously problem solving to help one of our Kinder families with technology.
and
Michelle Magness and Mary Foersterling- thank you for working quickly to get a student into a learning opportunity that fits the needs at this time

to Katie Jalove and Michelle Serini for their leadership during our Equity Core Team meeting this week.  What a powerful discussion!!!
and
to Andrea Sekulich and the 5th Grade Team for partnering to assist a student struggling to connect in a crowded house.
-From Jeff Sefcik

To Norine, We just want you to know that we all think you're pretty amazing. Your hard work doesn't go unnoticed. We really appreciate you coming in and giving it your all (even when your body is begging you not to) You are a Rock Star!! **Cheers** to the good news!

Thank you to Andrea De Matteo for jumping in her car last minute to drive a meal run this week!
and
Thank you to the lunch staff and teachers that help out delivering meals and supplies! We couldn't do it without you!
--From the Transportation Team

Kudos to Cheryl & Deb for all of their enthusiasm and hard work in getting our first grade materials organized and ready!! We appreciate you both so much. Cheryl, your daily initiative and willingness to learn the new tech platforms to encourage our kids has been so helpful! ❤️
and
Kudos to Victoria for all of your help, prep work and on the spot answers with the NWEA map test. My students would not have completed it without your guidance to me on what to do next. I appreciate your quick replies, especially when you were also juggling your own classes!  😁
and
Kudos to Erica for going above and beyond to serve all of us at Lotus. Your willingness to be available to bounce ideas and even create materials has been so incredible! Thanks for your lunch & learns—this works well with our schedules and feels so practical  and life-giving to get (live) tips and tricks on the spot. 👏🏽
-From Tiffany McGranahan

As I was getting children onto the Maps testing web site Tuesday, Victoria walked into my classroom precisely at the right time and added three or four kids to everyone one I added!  She was so skilled with the NWEA web site. Victoria anticipated what the kids needed if they were locked out! She didn’t even need the trouble shooting guidelines. Overall, she saved me at least a 1/2 hour of time or more!  She deserves some recognition for such great customer service and teamwork .
and
Special thanks to Cheryl Schuck and the Friday Delivery team for delivering some special items to a couple of my students! You made them very happy. Thanks for going above and beyond!
and
To Sue P. and Paula for going above and beyond in order to make sure that our parents have paper 📝 packets in hand.
-From Theresa Kovach

4th grade team
The team that all of you have created is awesome! I can’t say enough good things about all of you. You ROCK!!!
-From Sherry Tietjen

I've recorded a Loom presentation for our families to preview the Hybrid plan. It's linked here for you, and the slides are linked here. Both go out tomorrow morning.

I've also created a Hybrid Fast Facts document--this will be living and breathing. It's linked here.

Updated dashboard data 9/27/20:

Using the parameters of this data for our zip codes, we are clear to proceed with Hybrid planning!

*During team meetings, you will be asked to create priority list of students who--if their families are ok with in-person--should get first take at a seat. The students you identify as priority will get a seat before others, so please consider this carefully. Priority should be assigned based on 1) data and performance (how you're seeing them DO on the work) and 2) engagement (how you're seeing them ENGAGE ONLINE).

Travel Guidelines

As you may know, the Lake Co Superintendents meet each week with the Lake County Health Department. Yesterday, the topic of out of state travel came up. I asked for more clarification on travel, especially as we head into breaks...especially Thanksgiving...and here is guidance based on the directions from the Health Department:

AS OF RIGHT NOW--KNOWING THIS MAY CHANGE:

*Avoid travel if at all possible.
*No matter where you are, strictly follow the 3 W's:
  • Wear a mask
  • Wash your hands...A LOT
  • Watch your space---stay 6 ft apart
*Continue to use our self-certification protocol daily upon your return.
*Notify your principal and me of any COVID contacts or new symptoms immediately.

All this means that--as of today--we will NOT have to ask you to quarantine if you travel out of state BUT within the US. However, please CAREFULLY consider out of state travel and, as or more importantly, be sure you are following safety precautions no matter where you are!!!!

Phone Masking
Thanks to Mike and David for finding another options for phone masking:

Clocking In and Out

Hourly employees should clock in and out each day you are onsite. This helps us know who is in and also is used to confirm payroll. THANK YOU!

If You Are Sick/Need to Be Out

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE let your principals know ASAP if you are ill/know you need to be out. This means that--if you have a fever on a Friday--DO NOT WAIT UNTIL MONDAY to inform us. We have to plan for you, and knowing as soon as possible allows us to do so. The same is true if you know you have to be out. It's more complicated than EVER to plan for absences, so advance notification is key. We are reaching out to our subs and trying to get really creative on this as well, but we are also counting on YOU to communicate with us.

Remember, we expect staff to be onsite on the days you've indicated. We are counting on you on this.

Wednesday Calendar

I'm sharing the Wednesday CTT calendar with you here. It's a work in progress, but you can check back in to see how times are added. Please note that there will almost always be a mini-lesson and then time for your teams to work.

Laptop Purchase Requests

We have had a few staff members request an option to purchase the retired staff laptops (model: HP Probook). A limited number are available to purchase for $80. However, the following must be acknowledged and agreed upon before purchasing:

  • Once a device has been purchased, it will no longer be supported by D114 for troubleshooting hardware or software issues including but not limited to:

    • Battery

    • Screen

    • Keys

    • OS updates

    • Software installs or program licensing of any nature

    • Port functionality

    • Charger

  • Since the operating system (Windows 7) and other software currently installed on the laptops is licensed to the district, the laptop will be wiped entirely of the operating system and all data. Therefore, the buyer will need to purchase the operating system software and any other software needed. The buyer is responsible for determining the minimum system requirements of the laptop to meet the needs of the new operating system purchased.

If you are still interested after acknowledging the aforementioned, please let me know.

COVID-19 SAFETY PROCEDURES

If you are concerned that you have COVID-19 or have been exposed to COVID-19 and have been

or are scheduled to be onsite, please let your principal, Maddie Espinoza, and/or me know

immediately so we can partner with you for your safety and for the safety of others.

You can trust that we will keep all this information confidential, balancing staff privacy and system

safety needs.

All staff MUST wear masks AT ALL TIMES

when onsite and in public spaces.

If you are working in an office/classroom

with the door closed, you may remove your

mask. It must be worn when anyone enters

that space with you.

In addition, the steps below (from the CDC website) MUST be taken if you have been diagnosed with or

exposed to COVID-19:

COMING ONSITE:

You MUST complete the daily self-certification form.

Social distancing of 6 feet and following handwashing

procedures--inside and outside--remain expectations and

a priority for your safety and the safety of those around

you.

TREAT YO SELF TO SELF CARE

I'm going to use the book 180 Days of Self-Care for Busy Educators by my friend Tina Boogren to

share weekly nuggets of self-care ideas

for all of us.

Week 6: Altruism

Consider this:

"As I move about my days, I try to consciously engage in acts of kindness...Not only do I feel better,

but I'm certain that it's having an impact on those around me. Lately, I've committed to 5 acts of

kindness...I find myself having more good days than frustrating days, and I keep my eye on the good

in the world rather than getting bogged down by the ugliness."

-From Tina

This week's invitation: Commit to one altruistic act every day.

Ideas:

*Clean up for others--Rake a neighbor's yard. Help a colleague organize for a lesson or their

Google docs.

*Communicate--Call a student's parents and tell them something positive. Check in on a

colleague.

*Share positivity--Put a positive sticky note somewhere in the school. Be a respectful driver and give

others space (working on this one daily -HF).

*Give what you can--Give a colleague or student a good book or article. Give a stranger--or a

colleague--a compliment.

*Reward someone--Spring for someone else's coffee. Share a treat with colleagues.

Heading Closer to the 9/30 Update

Wanted to share some key pieces related to the update we've promised for 9/30--updated this week:

*A small group of us has worked to develop a local "dashboard" to show the status for re-opening specifically based on our own zip codes. The intent is to use this as a weekly tool to show how COVID data aligns with our position. Here's what the data indicated using Friday's data--the health department updates each Friday:

Using the parameters of this data for our zip codes, we are clear to proceed with Hybrid planning!

*We WILL NOT launch the full hybrid model as our first step. Rather, we will strategically add a little a time to make sure we can sustain. This will likely look like a grade or two at a time, along with other priority groups (example: EL/bilingual, IEP). More to come on a proposal for this--will share during CTT on 9/23 for your feedback.

*We WILL re-survey parents on in-person/remote after the 9/30 update, as their positions may have changed since we last asked in July. I'm guessing we will have more who want in-person than we can safely accommodate, so we'll have to create a "first come, first assigned" list.

*Yes, doing all of this will possibly bust up the class configurations in place right now. We went with content specialists from grades 2-4 so students would get time working with many/all teachers on their grade level team, making the shift a little easier as/if needed.

*There will be at least 2 weeks between announcing/setting a date for return and the actual return of students. This allows us all time to survey parents to determine who still wants remote, determine who from the onsite preference list we can safely host, plan for instruction, and get ready for the change. This means that any add recommended on 9/30 would actually start on 10/19 to launch with a full 5 day week schedule.

*After setting classrooms, it appears that, in general, we can have 11-12 students in a room at a time while keeping a teacher desk and teaching "station" so you can use interactive boards.

We know that having students on site is the BEST place for them to be and learn. The goal remains getting our kids back on site for learning, with a continued focus on balancing safety and learning. Your questions, suggestions, and feedback are welcome. This impacts us all, so there's no time ever that it's been more important to remain ONE TEAM...ALL IN.

I'm going to use the book 180 Days of Self-Care for Busy Educators by my friend Tina Boogren to

share weekly nuggets of self-care ideas

Week 5: Technology

NOTE: this was written before remote learning was even a concept we'd think of as "normal"!

Consider this:

Most of us struggle to go more than 10 minutes without checking our phones. The average American

spends two hours and fifty-one minutes on his/her phone each day. How is scrolling impacting your

happiness?

This week's invitation: Unplug for a bit.

Monday: Keep a running record of how many times you pick up your phone. At the end of the day,

how do you feel about that number?

Tuesday and Wednesday: Purposefully choose 15 sequential minutes in your day to unplug completely.

Thursday and Friday: You made it to 15 minutes for two days...can you push it to 20? 30? Push

yourself to see how long you can go and notice how it makes you feel.
